The CYPHER from the 2020 Red Bull Batalla de los Gallos
The global health emergency caused by COVID-19 changed the game for all events with a live audience. The Red Bull Batalla de los Gallos had to adapt and find a way to stage the most important global freestyle competition in the Spanish-speaking world for the 2020 season.
From Red Bull’s headquarters in Austria, the project managers got down to work, collaborating with our team to draw up a roadmap for this unusual season. One concept, 11 countries each hosting their own National Finals, 11 different television studios, and the inability to travel due to restrictions imposed by the health emergency – all of which complicated the situation. And so the brief was passed on to our production company.
Red Bull provided us with a concept to work from. As on previous occasions, we were joined by Eduardo Valverde, who took charge of creative direction and lighting, as part of the team that would develop the project and bring ‘El Cypher’ to life. And so a project was born that was scalable and, above all, replicable across the 11 countries, adapting to the resources available in each one, with a schedule that would leave no weekend free from 12 September to 28 November, starting in CHILE and ending in URUGUAY, from where the 11 national representatives for the 2020 International competition would emerge, joining the five who had already qualified.
A specific production manual was drawn up, complete with a highly detailed rider. This included renderings of the set-ups, a comprehensive lighting programme, adjustments where necessary, and comprehensive support for each local production in the respective countries, where we took part in all pre-event and on-site meetings.
It’s a pleasure to be working on this project with our dear Edu Valverde, who is now part of our Babblera family and who brings all his creativity to the table so that, together, we can make the most of this project.
