In August 2015, we undertook one of the most unusual commissions we’d ever been asked to do. Red Bull, together with the band SuperSubmarina (Sony Music), was staging its ORGANIC CONCERT for the second year running – an event where the lads from SuperSubmarina would perform a concert without the aid of amplifiers, speakers or anything else. Just their voices. And the audience consisted of 40 fans from all over Spain who’d been shortlisted via an online challenge where they had to prove just how big fans they were of the band.
Last year’s event took place in the Sierra de Cazorla Nature Reserve. Countryside, mountains, open land… This year, the aim was to bring them closer to the sea – and boy, did they get close!
We decided to stage the event atop a mussel raft in the middle of the Vigo Estuary, near San Simón Island. This was a major challenge for us, as we didn’t have many examples of concerts on mussel rafts to draw on (in fact, unless we’re mistaken, we believe this was the very first time). So we headed to Vigo and got straight down to work.
The Cofradía de Bateiros de Cesantes (Redondela – Vigo) could hardly believe their ears when we sat down with them to ask for this rather unusual venue, but they loved the idea and supported us right from the start. A bateiro boat to get us around the estuary, and we set about organising the second Red Bull Organic Concert with SuperSubmarina.
The participants arrived a day early, and on the day of the concert, in the morning, we took them to Cabo de Home beach, opposite the Cíes Islands, to take part in a team-based gymkhana where they had to pass tests of their knowledge of SuperSubmarina, dexterity and skill, endurance and even a blind Red Bull tasting.
We then took everyone out to the Batea for an exclusive performance by SuperSubmarina that lasted over an hour – just the band, the Batea, their fans, the Batea and the Vigo estuary.
The event concluded with a dinner for the fans and the band, alongside the entire production team. It was a marathon of a day, but a very rewarding one. We’re delighted, the client’s delighted, the band’s delighted… and we can’t wait to organise the third edition!
